Fuck Yeah RealXtend

I recently had a chance to check out the RealXtend project, and it actually looks pretty cool. Mesh support, shadows, and a better avatar attachment system.

I'm not 100% impressed, though, mostly because a few features seem half-finished and half-baked - but then again OpenSim was that way too a while ago. Example: You can't edit your avatar from inside RealXtend, you have to launch a separate program, customize your avatar, and then enter your login information in the avatar editor program to change your avatar appearance... LAME! Still it's a good start, and it has Python support with a DOM-esque system where the world is represented as python classes instead of that lame PHP-style mess of llFunctions everywhere.

They haven't released a new version lately; however. I suspect their custom Opensim might be getting a little old as we add new functionality fairly often.

The Java SDK Battles

Java SDK is annoying. There's like 10 different versions on Sun's page, one for EE users, one for the full SDK, etc. So I download the SDK, and it wants me to setup a server or something, and so I do so...

And then I realized, halfway through the JSDK install, that I downloaded the Java Application Platform SDK (Java EE, server stuff) when I really wanted the Java SE SDK. That's what happens when you Google with ambiguous terms. :/ So now I'm grabbing Java SE.

Damn you Sun, for having ten versions of the same thing. At least with M$ it's just "click here to download .NET C# compiler" not "click here for ten different incompatible SDKs". Now if only they weren't GNAA-level patent trolls.

P.S. GREAT the JDK/JSDK/Java SE SDK/J2SE/WHATEVER ITS CALLED has installers in installers. I hate those things.

P.P.S. FFS I don't want to register the J2SEJDSDK, stop creating new tabs when I'm trying to read bokuchan.
